Secretary-general of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin, has stated that former Thailand coach Peter Reid is one of the candidates to become the next Malaysia head coach.

Hamidin also added that the FAM have already interviewed Reid, but they are yet to make the decision whether to sign him or not.

According to Astro Awani, Hamidin said “Yes, Peter Reid is one of the candidates that we have in our list and we also have interviewed him recently.”

Previously, the FAM were about to sign Frenchman Philippe Troussier to replace Datuk K.Rajagopal as the national team head coach. However, failure to agree personal terms led to the FAM searching for other candidates.

“Peter Reid is one of them because we are searching for the best one in the business, and if we also failed to reach an agreement with him, we are going to continue searching for the best coach around to coach the team,” he added.

Currently, the national team are handled by Harimau Muda A coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee.  Under Kim Swee Malaysia have drawn with the Philippines as well as defeating Yemen 2-1 with only 10 men in Asian Cup qualification.

Malaysia did fail to qualify for the Asian Cup, but demonstrated improvement in terms of their tactical discipline and style of play under interim coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee.
